what happens to the spent free range hens.

Rescues take place to help rehome the spent free range hens too!!  People imagine free range means the hens roam fields - sadly this is not the case.  Some of them are in very restricted areas, and are very cramped - not all of course. 

When we go into the sheds for the hens, we are on a timescale, and our main aim is to get all 3,000 hens out.  Any left behind are slaughtered.  Thats not a nice feeling .......so the more we can rehome before the rescue, the more we bring out!!!

Henrehomers is expanding (it was only started last year and was known as the North London Hen Rescue) so hopefully someone may volunteer in Scotland to become a co ordinator!!

I think Jim Duff does an excellent job for the BHWT - Don't mean any offence but would it not be better to pool resources and combine with the BHWT?

Have emailed Jim Annie- they have a collection this weekend too- but I'm not sure we can pick up hens on Saturday which is when it is.

Will have to wait and see- maybe the next one.

There is a BHWT co ordination point not too far from me, but we are a completely separate rescue and there are no plans to merge with any other organisation.  I am not sure how many rescues they do, but I know in our area they do not seem to have as many rescues as us - which is probably every couple of months.

Beth they usually have collections all over the weekend.  I've just emailed Jim again as he hadn't replied.  I've said I can come up on Sunday.  It's always a Sunday I've gone up before.

I collected hens from Jim Duff today and was very impressed with the efficiency of the operation. I was lucky though as I contacted Jim last week and managed to reserve hens last minute. The next collection date in Scotland according the BHWT website is December! It was clear today how much work is involved for a whole team of people but I did think it was a real shame that if I had missed this chance I would have had to wait six months (and nearly all the BHWT collections in England over the next couple of months seemed to be full)!

I agree that it woud make sense to pool resources however any means of saving the hens is better than none!

I would be delighted to offer my help to assist with any rehoming service in Scotland. I am a poultry novice so couldn't do it alone but if you have any other volunteers Roxy, I could help out. If someone has suitable facilities I would be willing to do the coordination!

I'm off tomorrow to collect four for me and four for Beth and Ally(Ballingall) - but it is a drop in the ocean.  I have offered to help Jim and his team before but they haven't needed me so far.
