Which brush?
« on: May 16, 2013, 05:40:08 pm »
The boys are really moulting this year and are in need of a good brush. For some reason it didn't seem necessary last year, but this year they are looking very tatty. What sort of brush do I get? Do I get one for horses or is a dog one better? Should it be brush, or metal? I want to get it by the weekend so if anyone could reply asap I'd be so grateful.
One other thing. Ive never had to trim the boys hooves. They seem to trim them by themselves. I think its because they spend a lot of the day in front of the house on the gravel which seems to wear them down on their own I check them when they jump up at their door at night for their biscuit and they seem OK. Would you say this is normal?

You get special brushes/combs for fibre goats - I had one for my cashmere girls. Can't remember where I got it from. If you google cashmere goat comb, you'll find something.

And strangely enough, my girls never needed their feet done, either! I put that down to the fact they ran across concrete every day.

I have a horse one and a comb. They have a couple of baths (well hose showers! with my animals soap) each summer and a good groom out as and when they moult (ie now!) I think it depends on type of coat and their hair length/fibre, reg and savannah are both short coated but the togs are longer in hair and get a bit tangly.

For the long-coated GG's I use a dog comb/brush, similar to a carder and a comb too - these are metal. That sounds quite brutal but is the only way to get the tangles out. The short coated BT's just get brushed with the plastic horse combs/brushes, that lie flat against your hand. Mine are still sporting their full winter coat, but loads of stuff is coming out too... 1st show in just over a weeks' time - no way will they look proper...

I use a dog brush on mine but they are short-coated.

Mary, I would check their back hooves as well as they tend not to wear down as well as the front. My girls are yarded so should wear theirs down onthe concrete but they don't.  :(
