The trials and triumphs of keeping rabbits.
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:01:55 pm »
Year one was great - we got given a male and 2 breding large rabbits and had 2 liters.
This year one female had her litter but died in the duck pond ( gate left open) and the kittens could not survive without her. The other female rejected the male twice but every night she would escape from her large run (shared with ducks). Wild rabbits appeared for the first time in 2 years and despite the odd tuff of fur our female would be safe and sound in her hutch the next morning.
The other morning she had a litter and guess what ? A wild rabbit made his way through 2 fences of the chicken run and sat outside "mum's gage" kissing her  we are pretty sure that she has mated with a wild rabbit and the poor breeding buck just sits nursing his badly split nose. We think that either a wild rabbit bit him throgh the fence or he was so upset that he cut his nose trying to get out of his run.

Oh dear! Your poor buck! We have just started out with breeding rabbits and it hasn't gone as smoothly as I had expected for us either!  :fc: your boy gets some bunny lovin' next time  ;)

Have you had any problems with your doe sharing a run with the ducks? Our doe is in a very large hutch which is attached to a large run. We are raising our first batch of quail at the moment to keep for eggs and they have a separate house but we will be continuing to hatch more for meat. I was thinking of putting the meat quail out with the rabbit for the last 2 weeks until dispatch time but 1. wasn't sure if the doe would attack the quail, she is very aggressive while she is pregnant. and 2. whether the quail would be aggressive towards the doe and maybe the kits, i know they can be a bit harsh towards each other.

We rest the doe with the Muscovey ducks but they go into their own run and attached hatch when they have been with the buck. We did have one fight when the drake got a cut on his face but the rabbit can hop over a small fence to get  away if they want to. Otherwise the rabbit will sit in their hutches, dig underneath them and eat their food rather than their own.

One problem you might need to watch for MAK esp as it gets warmer is a fatal bunny disease carried by mossys. You can get an anti viral shot but its not 100% I keep a mosquito net over my hutches when its hot (soon)I lost all my stock in two weeks the year before last!
We have to have netting over any bunny runs as there are too many buzzards here. No wild bunnies here either...we do have hares though.

Thanks Mel - I will look up the disease carried by the mossys. Buzzards and Kytes all over the shop here buy "George and Mildred and son" who live across the field seem to patrol the lane and a field full of frogs. No takers of our rabbits of ducklings yet but  :fc:
The 10 kittens born to our doe and a wild buck are doing well.
