Hen with bald patch underneath
« on: April 23, 2013, 06:23:20 pm »
Hi.
Sorry if this is a common question.
My hen is bald underneath and the insides of her legs. It looks sore. I put some cream on and then she pecks it off. I think she must be pulling her own feathers out maybe?
I read somewhere that they do this sometimes, something to do with sitting on eggs?
Or could it be something else?
She was an abandoned hen, left under our bin with her friend. Her friend died from peritonitis a couple of weeks ago and she doesn't mix with the other hens very much.
Is it daft to think it might be stress?
Any advice welcome
Thanks

Is it red as well?  If so could be an indication of a prolapse to come (I think) - anyway, when we got our chooks from Little Hen Rescue a few weeks ago there was one like that and the girl there said she would keep that one as it might prolapse!

She does look a bit off colour, still eating and drinking, but not herself.
And it is red.
Can I do anything for her if it a prolapse?

We did get one with a prolapse - we have it on our 'sick bay' at the moment.  It has taken about a week to cure her - with daily washing, application of preparation H and popping it back in   :-[  Plus we took her off layer pellets and shortened her days - out of the shed about 9am and back in about 5pm with a tarpaulin over her pet carrier overnight!  We also added tonic to her drinking water.

She has been better about 3 days and is getting a bit feisty now - we have started introducing layer pellets again and want her to lay again before we put her back in with the others.  Hoping it doesn't re-occur!!!

Thank you.
I think I'll take her off pellets and keep a check on her.

Have you a cockerel? They can make a hen's backside rather red as the semen seems to affect them.

No, no cockerels here I'm afraid.
And it can't be the other hens because they'd never get to her chest and belly.
Thanks anyway
