keeping cocks or not?
« on: April 25, 2013, 09:41:31 am »
I have 5 quail chicks in the brooder who are 2.5 weeks old. I want to build a flock of roughly 6 hens and 1 cock. Obviously I'm not going to get this with my first lot of chicks which is why I have another 22 eggs in the inncy. Of the 5 chicks I do have, now their chest feathers are starting to come in, i think we have 3 cocks and 1 hen plus one with a gammy leg who will be going in the pot whatever sex his is, bless him.

Initially i thought i would weigh the cocks and keep the heaviest for my flock and eat the rest and when the other chicks are ready I'll add more hens. However i then remembered how violent quail can be during mating and wondered whether I should just keep the 1 hen as I'm bound to get another cock with the next hatch. But that would mean she would be on her own for a few weeks and i don't want to make her lonely. Theres also the risk that ill be unlucky and lose my next hatch for some reason. Any thoughts?  :chook:
