can i legally...

We have one 10 month rigged ram lamb (our first attampt at castration last year went wrong) and he is being very dominant and was hassling one of our ewes with her babies. He also can jump our fence and keeps escaping. We want to eat him but our trailer is broken. Can we dispatch and eat him ourselves? Our neighbour is a regular hunter and has a gun and all the equipment to do everything properly but I don't want to break the law.

Pretty sure you can so long as it's for your own consumption (i.e. not sold or passed into the food chain).

Just make sure the neighbour has the correct firearms for the job, the last thing you want is an injured animal and all the legalities that will bring!

You can do this although the definition of own consumption is strict and worth googling. However the specified matter from the carcass is required to be disposed of by the fallen stock people (eg head) so there's still a cost involved if you do everything by the book.

That's great. Thanks. I can take the bits and bobs to my local fallen stock guy in the car so will be easier than hiring a trailer to take him live to the abbattoir. Neighbour regularly shoots and butchers deer so should be OK. Thanks a lot. X

Yum! Just had some lamb chops. Will definitely do this again as so much less stressful for him than the trip to the abbattoir. Took him down when he was munching on his dinner near to his flock. They didn't notice and it was all done so quickly that it was best for him. Thanks for your advice.
