Garlic and Seaweed
« on: February 14, 2013, 11:32:49 pm »
Just bought some garlic and some seaweed for my girlies and realised I have no idea how much to give them.  Any suggestions please?

The garlic comes with a wee cup/spoon thingy and mine get one of these per goat at keast once a week, if I remember twice (it is about equal to heaped teaspoon). They will have smelly breath a bit for the next day (or lets say differently smelly breath to usual), but I have never had any taint in the milk. Seaweed is a sprinkle a few times a week, mixed into their sugar beet shreds. You may have to start off with just a little as some of mine objected to the seaweed at the beginning.

What benefits do the garlic and seaweed give the goats?

Yes, never heard of this, surprised any animal likes garlic.

I buy both by the sack full. All of the goats ,horses, donkeys and dogs get it every day in the feed
The goats can be a bit picky with the seaweed from time to time but as said if mixed into the wet sugarbeet they usually eat it

My sheep get seaweed mixed in with their sugar beet shreds too, they don't complain... goats normally eat it as well, but not all the time.

Seaweed - lots of trace elemments, iodine
Garlic - as jingljoys says - good all-rounder for the blood. However I do NOT rely on it for worm control, but I am sure it helps.

My garlic didn't have any measure with it but the label does say how much to give a horse or pony.  It seems to be quite a lot more than you are suggesting for a goat, Anke.  I used to give my first goat garlic but couldn't get any when we first moved so forgot about it.  I'll try them with a bit tonight.

Give garlic to my goats, would it be good for the sheep? only have a few ewes and a ram?

Tried the garlic the other day, well mixed in and that was eaten.  Today I sprinkled some seaweed over the top and that went as well, so they must like it.  At the moment, anyway.  Tomorrow's another day.
