For anyone interested in current prices for cade/orphan lambs and ewes with lambs - I know there are a few people on here looking to buy at the moment.  I always find the weekly reports interesting reading  

Store Lambs (2594)
A very large entry of 2594 Store Lambs sold to a much dearer trade for all forward. The best sold to £87.50 and £77.  Mediums ranged £55-£70. Very small nearly all £25 plus. Overall average £57.02.
Couples (226E & 328L)
Another good entry of 226 Ewes with 328 Lambs at foot met with a very difficult trade with noticeably less interest this week. The good quality remained sought after however ewes lacking condition or outfits with smaller lambs at foot were less money. The lack of grass at present certainly factored. Doubles to £150 (£50/life). Others to £140 (£46.67/life). Singles to £122 (£61/life) and £120 (£60/life). Overall average £39.46/life.
Breeding Ewes (160)
160 Breeding Ewes forward with Texel ewe Lambs to £90 and £84. In lamb New Zealand Romneys to £68 x 6 and £64.
Grazing Ewes & Rams (1043) – Vendors are reminded that female sheep sold for slaughter are not to be heavily in lamb.
Another large entry of 1043 Grazing Ewes sold to a similar firm trade to a top price of £99.50 Mediums ranged £50-£80, plain £35-£40. Boners £20 plus. Overall average £57.70.
Orphan Lambs (91)
A much larger entry of 91 Orphan Lambs sold to an easier trade. Stronger types in demand to £35. Others to £25.  Younger types £5-£10. Overall average £10.38 back on last week.

Does anyone know if you buy cade lambs what the offical transport rules are if any? I have previously bought these home in a dog crate in a car but if buying from market would they check if the lambs departed the market in a proper trailer?

The regs are the same for cades as normal lambs I believe. I remember the bank holiday market at Chelford last year where loads of cades were entered as the kids were off school. As a results parents were buying them as pets for their kids. Trading Standards were absolute b******s with people who were just going to do as I would and put them in the back of the car.

It was Sedgemoor market -  I have never seen a Jacob ewe with lambs at foot there, but I do not go there every Saturday, so there may well be some on the weeks I do not go.  There are always a mixture of ewes with lambs though, plenty of pure Wiltshires, Poll Dorset and some of the coloured fleece breeds.  There is usually some goats with kids for sale too. Sedgemoor Market is a really nice market to visit as apart from the sale of the animals, on a Saturday there's also a sort of car boot affair and also a local Farmers market where you can buy all sorts of produce and farming equipment.  They also have a fabulous canteen that sells the most tasty bacon butties and full English breakfast!

I can certainly agree with the canteen reccommendation as their breakfast's are just the thing after an early start!!

I'm with Trading Standards (unusually) on this one!  What's the likelihood that anyone bundling a couple of lambs into a car has the knowledge/equipment/feed/set up to adequately care for them once home?  The market would, presumably, weed out the ones without even a holding number but .....

A dog crate would be OK for carrying them home in - I am pretty sure that so long as you can wash it out and disinfect it, it would be fine.

I have moved piglets in a dog box before and it works very well (so long as the crate is big enough of course!
