I am selling up! GOS X Oxford Sandy&Black for sale
« on: November 28, 2012, 10:29:05 am »
I am trying to sell up as i can no longer keep pigs. I have an amazing sow and GOS x Oxford Sandy & Black which I am trying to get rid of. If anyone is interested please contact me, as I am seriously considering turning them all into sausages as there seems to be no market out there at the moment. Any tips, advice or interest would be gratefully recieved. Many Thanks

Sausages I am afraid. The market is awash with lots of pigs at the moment and even good quality stock isn't budging. Price of food, straw and a crap summer have taken their toll.

So sad to hear yet another pig person is giving up, is it just the general cost of things or have you moved onto other projects.

Yes, Mandy, as long as it's for SPOT PRESS!

It is very depressing how many people are (and quite understandably) getting out of pigs. My pork buyers cannot afford to pay more and are buying much less. So my farmers markets have gone.  People buying weaners are buying less or not at all.  :gloomy:  My local abattoir folded this year and where I get them butchered  is also closing soon. GOS' were worried about their numbers getting to great, I'm worried if there's going to any left!

thats precisely what is going in the next PP mandy. In fact if anyone on here wants to put comment on this or put their thoughts down, I will be more than happy to incorporate them into the article. It would be good to get a broad idea of peoples thoughts on why there is such a crisis in pigs.

Over the years I have generally purchased a couple of weaners and reared them up for the house every couple of years or so.

Last time they were due, knowing the massive increase in feed prices; before I purchased I did the sums, and it just didn't make it worth while, even if the weaners were cheap to buy, so I am one less buyer.

I have purchased half a pig since for the freezer, but because of the price probably am using less meat than I normally would.

Owing to the massive increases (Over £7 for a bale of wood shavings on my last order  :o  ) I think I may have to increase the price of my chickens/hatching eggs for next year, as I at least hope to cover most of the costs of the food, bedding. electric, etc, otherwise the hobby just become TOO much of a drain on the resources.

Hope I haven't gone too much off topic, but its all related
