Hi everyone  :wave

I have just bought a small flock of Castlemilk Moorit ewe lambs.
I am right at the top North East corner of Scotland... anyone else out there with Castlemilks in Scotland?

Congratulations, you've picked a delightful breed

They have Castlemilks, among other rare breeds, at Palacerigg outside Glasgow.  Still quite a way from you.

There are at least two TASers in Scotland with Castlemilks, no doubt they'll be along to say Hi  shortly.

I'm just over the border in England but north of Hadrian's Wall (just), so quite a long way from you!  I had 4 Castlemilk wethers last year to see if I could cope with primitives here.  They did brilliantly and I absolutely loved them.  They're in the freezer now and I have two Castlemilk ewe lambs bossing me about now  :D   I've started spinning since getting the wethers, so now I choose my sheep for their fleece as much as for the breed, so I also have 2 Manx Loghtan gimmers and 2 Shetland x Castlemilk ewe lambs, one of which has a touch of Blue-faced Leicester in her so a very soft fleece  :)  We can't manage a primitive tup here, so I won't be breeding pure, so it isn't an issue mixing up the breeds for me.

Hi Landhallow    - I'm in the North East Aberdeenshire and have 8 Castlemilk Moorit ewes and a lovely ram Mortimer. 2 of them were gimmers last year and we got 4 lovely lambs from them last spring and they lambed easily. Good luck with yours.

....and hi   from Scottish Borders, I'm half hour south of Edinburgh - we have 2 CM ewes which we should breed from next spring but we are going to put off - it's too flipping wet and I fear problems may lie ahead in the spring so am going to wait until next year.  We have ronaldsays and soays too but the CMs are the most beautifully proportioned, elegant sheep ever - particularly when they are sheared and you can see their profile more, just lovely sheep and lovely soft fleeces.  It's taken ours a while to come to the bucket, they are the most nervous sheep we have had, but they are quite friendly now.  Enjoy your sheep
registered soay, castlemilk moorit  and north ronaldsay sheep, pygmy goats, steinbacher geese, muscovy ducks, various hens, lots of visiting mallards, a naughty border collie, a puss and a couple of guinea pigs

HI everyone!
Wow, it's nice to know you are out there if I need advice!!  :excited:
My girls now run towards me when they see me with a bucket - just started giving them the odd bit of veg tops when I have been in the veg plot and they are definitely getting friendlier.
I have a couple of black Cheviots too but they are over at a neighbours with the tup. WIll have my first lambs off them next year, so that should be exciting.
I like the rare breeds though and am very happy with my Castlemilks. Will be breeding from them next year and expanding my small flock!
Where do you usually find your Castlemilks? I am thinking of going to the Dingwall Rare breeds sale to look for a tup next year  :fc:
Bye for now

I got my wethers from a Rare Breeds farm near Penrith.  I bought the ewe lambs at Lanark Rare Breeds Sale. They're from a Children's Farm so are silly tame - but are not registered; I think places like that find it difficult keeping track of which lamb came from which ewe/tup so tend not to register the lambs, which is a shame.
