Hi I am new to AS would just like to say hello and say what a cracking site this is.
My question concerns pigs and line breeding. I have 2 sows out of Clarence / Clare lines and I have the chance of purchasing a very nice Clarence Boar not from the same herd as the sows. Are there any major concerns in using this boar as the sire. I have line bred ferrets with no problems but would like to know if this would be a problem with pigs. As you have probably guessed I am new to pig keeping and would hate to do anything that would put the wellbeing of the pig in jeopardy.

not sure if i can help but i breed GOS and we only have four boar lines so it happens a lot, so long as the boar isn't related to your girls ie their father, uncle, brother or nephew then its ok to use the same line if hes from a completely different herd, if you get his pedigree number you can look up his pedigree on the BPA website and compare it to your girls to see if there are any in common relations. That what i do with my GOS.

i breed kunes and we only have 4 boar lines but i always try to avoid the sows sire line and the boar's dam line in the first generation

It's not the boar line that's the issue. You need to have a good look at the pedigrees of both the boar and the sow and see if they have common ancestors - and how closely they may be related. If you have the pedigree names, it's easy to do a check on the BPA website, using the herdbook section.
