Well the girls went off for their 8am slot at the abattoir today. It wasn't as bad as I expected and no tears were shed either by them or me 
We put them in the trailer last night and they settled down very quickly into the straw. OH checked on them before we went to bed and they were fast asleep. They looked happy this morning and didn't seem put out when the ab man shooed them from the trailer. They walked through the door and that was the last I saw of them.

Well done Sally, I wish I could have said the same as you about the no tears   but at least I didn't disgrace myself infront of the abattior staff
I collect my pork tomorrow  how exciting - hope it has turned out ok. Will let you know   and I am sure we will hear about yours too.

I have asked for lots of sausages but they are also going to do 5 kilos of mince so that I can have a dabble at doing my own.  Expect a sausage thread over the weekend, once I have untied myself from the knotted sausage casings

I think it's often the thought of taking them that's worse 
It's not nice, but it's an essential part of keeping pigs and rearing your own.

But look at it from your pigs point of view - they've had a great life with you (outside, sun on their backs, snouts in the mud and I bet, more than one or two treats and tummy rubs  ) much better than any of their commercial relations will have had

Do you know what weight they were yet?  I recollect in another post you saying they would be about 27 weeks so am interested to know?

It's almost nice thinking that they don't know what is to come, just snuffling around the new place!
And, now you'll be wanting to get some more!

I always take mine into the slaughter house and they go quite happy. I do miss them for a few days but when the pork comes back it taste great. Then I look forward to rearing the next two

Pete, I don't know what the dead weight is yet.
I tape measure weighed them on Monday evening  and my estimate was 58.78 kilo for the smaller one and 69.85 for the bigger one.  I will post when I get details back from the abattoir.
