Lotion for pigs?? Skin wormer?
« on: September 10, 2012, 04:05:55 pm »
Well, seems like Porker is sun burnt a little. Might also be parasites or something...
I have Ivomec pour on, Horse paste Ivermectin, 1.87% wormer and Ivermectin. Can I use either to help clear up his skin? Some does seem like parasites, but then other areas around ears look like sun burning. Ideas? The black pigs are fine, skin is clear and even.

Here's some pics of him. I got the ear tag out yesterday. Pics are a little over saturated, so you can't see that he's actually not an even pink. But around the eyes you can somewhat see.

Porker  :roflanim:  could have sunburn - use aftersun & protect him in the sun by using a high factor protection on him a couple of times a day (your coloured boys should be fine) - encourage wallowing & make sure they know where to find some shade.
Not too sure on your photos - have a sniff - it could be greasy-pig, you'll definately know if it is  :P  if it is or there's any sign of infection he'll need some antibiotics from your vet (they may also take a skin scrape to confirm what it is).
If I remember rightly, your boys are fairly young - it could be worth checking with their breeder what parasite control was used on them before you picked them up.

Looks nothing like greasy-pig and they smell only like pigs.
They have two areas for shade and a kiddy pool for water. They never go into any 'wallows' I make them...they just walk around it and into their pool.
Only the pink pig was in bad shape when I got him. He is not related to the two blacks and from a different farm over 4.5hrs apart. Porker was 3mo when I got him.
Two blacks are brother and sister, 2mo when I got those. They have always been smooth and no odd flaking or anything.
I'm keeping the black girl and the pink boy for breeding. The black boy is a roaster pig.
Mr. Porker & Ms. Porkette. Roaster has a bunch of nicknames, from roaster, dinner pig, bacon etc. Trying not to get attached to him, but he is more friendly than his sister...ugh. I still cannot pet her. I can pet the pink and black boys. Porker loves me now, started running to me today when he hears the gate, follows me, wants to climb the fence to follow, flops over for me all the time.

As HH has said use sun factor products for protection on fair skinned pigs, the other rash could be prickly heat or nettle rash which may need a smother of antihistimine cream, i find Sudocrem(don't know if you can get in the US) heals and deals with most skin problems.

What is a 'sun factor product'? Sunscreen??
I can't find Sudocrem here.
Will aloe with sunscreen in it work?

I don't use bedding, they are out in a big section of grass. They will be on rotational pasture when they reach a size that isn't dinner for the fox and coons. The pink pig came with the redness and patches, he was kept in a barn in a crate on straw.

So, can I use one of the following to de-worm/de-parasite the pig orally or topically? I don't want to inject the pig.

No the cream is just for the rash (try baby bottom rash cream !)if you want to worm you will need an in feed product like Panacur or Flubenol, in the uk we can get these form our local agricultural store, your vet may be able to advise whats available in the US, reall the jabs are the best an ivermectin based one will sort all or you.
