Swollen foot
« on: August 05, 2012, 08:10:47 am »
One of my Quail has a very swollen foot. She isn't putting any weight on it and it is very hot. I've done some research but I can't find out anything about what has coursed it or how to treat it. Any ideas.

Bert, try looking at Bumblefoot in chickens.

We had it in one of our hens about 2 yrs ago and so identified it in a quail last year. Our hen recovered after vet. treatment and we did try to treat the quail but dispatched as the infection got worse and we decided the stress of being handled and the slim chance of recovery was not fair.

Thanks in the hills
Bumblefoot is what I was thinking. Was also thinking dispatch would be the kindest thing  :'(

Sadly, I think that maybe you are right.  :'(

Our hen with Bumblefoot recovered and was fine for about 18 mnths or so. Recently came back and we have taken her for more vet. treatment. If it returns again we will dispatch  :'(  I think you can home treat but ours needed antibiotics so had to visit vet anyway for these and they didn't charge much for cutting open the foot etc. Wound has to be kept open for a few days to allow pus to drain. We tried for a day or so to soak and drain the quails foot but the infection was spreading quite quickly and it we decided that it was unfair to continue to treat and kinder to dispatch. You could have a go but they aren't as easy to handle as hens and get very stressed.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
