taking temperature?
« on: June 17, 2012, 11:00:23 pm »
I noticed on the other post about coughing it was suggested taking the temperature.  How do you do this, is it like I do to the horses??  (doubt a pig will stand still though)

Yup, rectal temperature. If a pig's really ill, it'll stay still. Otherwise I give mine some favourite food and do it while they're eating. If they're used to being handled they should be OK!

I had to do this for the first time recently and was very worried about it and tried to remember the pig keeping course when they made it look so easy.
They said give them some food and do it while they are eating but as mine was off her food it wasn't an option so OH grabbed the back legs and lifted her up, wheelbarrow style then I did the deed. Actually it was easy. We needed to call the vet out and she also took the temperature with OH doing the wheelbarrow trick again.

Mine don't seem to mind too much - a bit of lubricant on it helps too, something like veg oil in the absence of agri-lube
