Another worming question!
« on: June 19, 2012, 02:24:58 pm »
Hello,

another worming question! With most injectable workers, the shelf life, once open, seems to be 3-6 months. I only keep low numbers of pigs, so use a small amount of the solution and tqhen have to chuck most of it away. Any ideas on using something more economical? Or is it OK keep the solution a bit longer? I was thinking of moving to an oral wormer but most folk on here seem to think injection is best.

Thanks again in advance!

thanks for asking this, as I thought the whole injection would be administered in one go.  As I only have two pigs, I assume I'd also be wasting a lot too ???

(not clued up on piggy products, still learning) 8)

Most products state dispose of after 28 days once opened. A 50ml bottle of noromectin or similar is only about 12 quid anyway so it's not going to bankrupt you.

I'm not worried about the cost, I just think using 6 ml from a 250 ml bottle, and throwing the rest away, is pretty wasteful. I didnt realise that I could get a 50 ml bottle, which will be slightly less wasteful. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of some handy 10 ml aliquots or something of a similar low volume :-\  Doesn't the oral wormer, being a dry powder, have a longer shelf life?

It does have a longer shelf life but i dont think it is as affective and it doesnt kill lice and as much as you may not think they have them they can appear from nowhere and make the end carcass look awfull with all the bitemarks. Try to get the smallest bottle you can and either share or i have kept mine in the fridge.
