Sickly lamb+ear lobe filling with blood
« on: May 08, 2012, 11:59:11 am »
Need some help with a very poorly lamb, firstly how quickly does a lamb tonic to work? Secondly the lamb's ear lobe has blood filling inside it, anyone encountered this? She has not hit her head at  all and has been in a box with blankets for 2 days as mother rejected it.

She's still with us, never known such a fighter. The future is still a long way off!

I'm sorry I've no advice for you about the lamb tonic or her ear, but just wanted to say good luck with her. One of my ewes, now 2 years old was rejected by her mother and was in a very sorry state when I was given her 'to try to do something with' She was a real fighter and I was determined she would pull through and she did! So I hope someone will post you some useful info. soon but in the meantime all I can advise is to keep her warm and well fed. Give your local vet a ring for advice. Good luck and keep us posted on her recovery.

Tonics are pretty quick to work, what have you tried? Liquid life aid can be given several times. Did she get colostrum from her mum? Assuming you are bottle feeding, little and often to start, no idea on her ear though sorry, hope she's ok.

We used kick start and yes she did get her mums colostrum. Sadly she died this evening. Been a smallholder for a number of years but every now and then you come across one like this that pulls the heart strings so to speak.

As I posted I've been a smallholder for a few years, about 12 in total, but this is our first proper lambing season. I bought 8 pedigree romneys and a pedigree ram last autumn . Our neighbour has three grass munchers that decided they preferred our grass, or the ram more like. Ours produced produced 11 healthy lambs (first three needed our help, head no legs presented), 1 still birth, mums all first timers. Next doors so far have produced 1 healthy single and then twins, one huge and then the little one who we fought to save.

Sorry to hear about your lamb but vis a vie the ear lobe filling with blood, we had this happen with a new born piglet and the vet told us to leave it as it would disipate of its own free will but the pig would grow up with a cauliflower ear (like a rugby player or boxer ;D) which it did. The vet told us that it was a blood vessel broken during the trauma of birth (he was a big 'un backside first!) Glad i rung the vet because i would have lanced it and he would have bled to death!!

That's interesting  Mandy, I've had a piglet like it too, although it wasn't caused at birth, it was through play fighting, it swelled with blood, then gradually subsided leaving a cauliflower ear!
