wev been tattooing the piglets today, their ears are just big enough for our tattoo pliers at 6.5wks old.
as they are birth notified they need two sets of numbers ie herd and individual.
just wondering do u all buy 2 sets of pliers or do u all faff around changing numbers in the pliers on every single piglet - or is there an easier way?

Hi Julia,
We farf about with just the one set of piers and ONLY take out the relevent numbers required, so none get lost in the tattooing, make sure to test on a piece of paper for the tatoo numbers to be the right way round, our pliers are over 40 years old and still work a treat. No doubt Robert will know exactly how old they are when he read's this post and will confirm their age.

they the pliers are nearer 60 years old    they have to have the herd no and there individual number for instance ABC 123 then the next one is ABC 124 and so on   but if you are just starting it would be ABC 001 or ABC 1 and never repeating the number twice

our pliers are 6 digits in a row and just fit the ear. does the tattoo grow with the pig or does the writing stay small? a bit of a daft question but dorothys tattoo had really big digits, yet when we tattooed ours finishers just before slaughter the tattoo was very tiny.
after doing 16 ears, my son is a dab hand at catching weaners ...lol...there wasnt room to put herd and individual numbers on the same ear.
what age do u tattoo yours?

yes the tattoo grows with the ear but you can get different sizes of letters and numbers   we do ours at 8 weeks
