Mangalitza's are a slower growing breed and more similar to Kunes than 'big' breeds. Generally I think slaughter around 80Kg at approx 16 months - but haven't raised any myself. Chel on here keeps Mangalitza's and so does Tiva Diva (there might be others too) might be worth dropping a quick pm ?
The Tamworth in the cross might get them growing quicker (my Kune x OSB's a massive @ 16 weeks - even compared to pure bred OSB's!) you'll need to monitor their condition really carefully (difficult to tell by any other way than feeling or weighing because of all that hair) and adjust feeding as necessary to stop them getting overfat, pure Mangalitza's can produce up to 70 liters (might be pounds ???) of lard if fed for this purpose  :o so just make sure they're not getting too heavy  ;)
I've heard Robert say before that the meat is an aphrodisiac (I've not tried it  ;)) and it's certainly full of Omega oils (the healthy ones, normally found in oily fish - good for brains !)
Why not give 'em a go - they'll be great to look at for sure  ;D

our butcher recommended putting my lop to a mangalizer as they marble the meat with fat . haven't tried a cross yet but have tried pure sausages which were very good and have two legs air drying .. they were quite lean at 8 months .  :o  ;D we are just experimenting at the moment so my knowlege is very limited but the end product was very nice  :thumbsup:just try them

Hi there,

If you cross a mangalitza with another breed, you will loose all the goodness that comes with the mangalitza.  But by all means give it a go.  Why  not see if you can buy a pure mangalitza and one that is crossed and then you can see which one you like the best.
