nature in the raw

yesterday was such a wonderfull day birds singing all day long a sure sign that spring is on its way making a change from the marauding magpies they will get the same as the last breeding pair that nested here
as i said birds singing all day long in the hedgerow at the back of the pig pens then suddenly all hell breaks lose blackbirds giving of the danger signal  a rustling in the base of the hedge(one side is a dyke the other is rabbit netting ) goes over to investigate  and a  hawk has caught a blackbird still living the hawk could not get out because of the dyke fence and hedge calls Lillian to get the camera but by this time the hawk is making its way to the end of the hedge and freedom still with its catch in its claws a well one less songbird and a possible reason for the songbirds decline     birds of prey being protected unlike these maurading barstewards of magpies :farmer:

Robert, Nature will find a way of balancing things out. Lots of magpies one year mean less songbird chicks next year, so, less food for magpie chicks= less magpies the year after and more songbirds. I know you have to do it--I couldn't stand back and see birds starve during the winter any more than the next person but this does alter the balance. More songbirds come through the winter etc. etc. etc.
Whose to say a magpie is less precious than a robin? Or a sparrowhawk less than a bluetit?
Hawks, especially have no other source of food---no Tesco in the tree tops :)
