What fruit and veg do you buy ?
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:09:17 am »
Thank you to everyone who responded to the message below - there was such a good take up that Sarah has now reached her limit for replies!  I knew I could rely on the folk on here for support  :)

My daughter is in her final year at Leeds Univ and as part of her dissertation she is doing a survey.

It would be great if you could complete the survey below to help her test her argument about waste and the environmental impact. If this link does not hyperlink please copy and paste to your browser.

I was amazed to learn of EU regulations regarding size, shape and quality of fruit and veg. Many have been scrapped but what a cost for beuracrates to write papers and rules for the EEC to debate and approve. That is a waste!
Big supermarkets buy fields and will scrap the entire crop if it does not meet their quality.
Lettuce - it arrives all year around by road from Portugal - it is processed and bagged for all the supermarkets in one place then distributed across the UK- Guess where?
Answer: Well it is not slap bang in the middle of the UK or near any major roads. Kings Lyn !!!!!!!!

Done.

I have STV coming tomorrow as they are making a programme called "Celebrity Waste Watchers"  ::) It's funded by the Scottish Government to encourage folk to reuse, recycle, reduce etc etc.

I pinted out to the researcher that while it was absolutely right to encourage individuals to stop wasting food, there was an awful lot of waste BEFORE the food even got to the supermarket. I don't think she got it  :(

supermarket food waste, either in the field or the shop is one of the most immoral, criminal, scandalous and downright disgusting practices around, people go hungry in this country let alone other countrys. it should be stopped asap.

Celebrity waste ( or is it waist) buster !

I agree with all above. My daughter has been feeding me with facts each time she visits us. Fortunately I am essentially mean and she has not needed to tell me off for waste - but my waist has enlarged over the winter.

Food in this house?  If we don't eat it it goes in the dogs, the goats or the wormery.

we buy pea can't get enough of them but we grow all other vegges we eat - was approached by a waste adviser to tell how to cut down, we explained that other from a small amount of plastic that gos in the bin (we put it out about every six t- eight weeks) every thing else is recycled  or composted - we also said if they started at the big wasters in industry, supermarkets and got them to stop that would help.

Did any one see the prog about the NHS kitchen in Yorkshire and the waste of food they had. (was in the royal Brampton and can say the food was brill)
when the revolution comes it will be a co-op
