Advice on Geese Please?
« on: January 23, 2012, 10:45:56 am »
Does anyone know what Breed are our Geese? We acquired them last year (they are about 10 months old now) & have tried to find the breed on the internet but with no success!
They have just started trying to mate on water, we have no idea of what sex they are, as they all look the same (tried vent sexing) do they try & mate according to sex or just grab anything by the scruff of the neck? Will they lay soon if they are females? (It is quite warm here about 70 degrees at the moment)

They look like my Steinbacher crosses. They're not pure Steinbachers as their beaks are too long and they don't have the black 'lipstick' and 'bean'.

My experience is that they do mate according to gender, so you can tell by behaviour. That's actually how I sex my geese, which ones behave like ganders :)

I am not a "goose" expert, though I am learning fast.  They look a bit like one of mine, which I hatched from supposedly African goose eggs of e**y  >:( a couple of years ago.  I posted lots of photos in the interweb trying to find out her breed, but the closest I could get was that she was a cross.  However she did lay very well and all her eggs were nicely fertilized

I have recently got a pair of Crested Geese and don't really want her to be in with them, so I am afraid she will have to go, which is a pity as she is a lovely friendly girl.

She is the one on the left and looks pretty similar to yours.

From my limited goose keeping experience I would guess that the one at the front of you piccy is the gander  :)

Yes our geese do look like the one in the photo. Ref the sexing by behaviour, one of them behaves like a gander then like a goose! (If you know what I mean) ;)

If you were close enough I would love her,I am sure she would get on with my two!
