Help ! We have found 2 OSB weaners about 100 miles away, but I have been advised by the breeder that now all pigs have to be moved in a trailer ? We were planning to put them in a very large dog crate in the back of our land rover ?

Also do we need a movement license to do this ? I have looked on DEFRA and am slightly confused.
As we are new to this, any help and advice would be very greatfully received.

last time i moved three weaners, from halifax to sheffield, last november. i used a dog crate filled with straw in the back of my land rover. I have a small trailer, which is just the right size for four but i knew the place i was going was not trailer freindly. the lady from the local council had no problem with this when she visited to inspect.
if your journey takes you past here you are more than welcome to borrow the trailer and I can collect it when i come that way later next month.

Hello,

You need a licence to transport farm animals for distances over 40 miles. I've got one however I have never been asked to produce it. I think the breeder is being a bit of a stickler however - if there is enough room for the weaners to move and lay down in comfort what you're suggesting is OK. Have you been in contact with Heather Royle at the breed society ([email protected]) she my well be able to put you in touch with someone closer.
The actual "movement" documentation (afik) is the responsibility of the breeder to produce.

Thanks for your help, hopefully we have found somewhere to hire a trailer from. If all goes to plan we are going to pick the pigs up on Saturday, am very excited. Also a bit nervous as we haven't had pigs before, have done lots of research and a day at pig paradise in Wiltshire.

We brought our first weaners home in the tailgate of Dan's Citroen ZX. WE lined it with black bags and some newspaper, I think. My job was to sit in the back seat and "comfort" them ie keep them in the back. Actualy, they slept all teh way home. We must have been nuts. We had to drive back with the windows open because of the smell. Gave "white van man" a surprise when he looked in when we stopped at traffic lights!
