Flock Reduction
« on: August 25, 2011, 10:54:17 am »
Hello,

We have had a rethink of the best way to reduce our small mixed flock of ewes and castrated Rams - We need to reduce as other priorities are taking our time at the moment.

So will be taking them to Melton Market on Tuesday next week.

However, if someone in the south Lincolnshire area (or someone who can collect from south Lincs) would be interested in the following we would be happy to sell prior to the market:

3 x Suffolk X Ewes (Age 4) - £40 Each
2 x Southdown Ewes (Age 6 - 7 ) £40 Each
Several Southdown X (Age 1 - 3) £40 Each
Several Southdown X Castrated Rams (Age 1 ) £40 Each

All the Ewes are ready to go to a Ram (except 1 which has a history of prolapse)

If interested please PM with your phone number.

Many Thanks

Dougal

Personally I think your valuations are way off the mark. You can't buy a shetlander in Thainstone just now for £40! They need to be at least £55-£60 for the ewes as culls (if they are lean), £70-£75 as breeders if they are whole mouthed with sound udders. And these are bottom of the market prices.

Texel ewes in Thainstone last week were £122 a head. They were fat but not huge ewes. Plain Mule ewes which were newly weaned, so not fat, were £78-£81 a head.

The tups (if they are fat) will be at least £80, perhaps the length of £100, if they are leaner then you might only get £70-£75 for them. Don't sell yourself short, at your valuations I could drive all the way down from Aberdeenshire and buy your sheep, put them in a trailer and drive them all the way back. Hold them for the 13 days standstill and then run them into the mart and still make a profit on them! Not fair on you or your sheep.

Be proud of your stock and don't let someone else cash in on your hard work and pride! Best of luck with them though, I'm sure it'll be a sad day for you when they go.
It's always worse for someone else, so get your moaning done before they start using up all the available symathy!

Yup, Dougal says it.  At the very least, don't offer them at less than fat price or someone will take advantage of that.  Having said which, of course the only way you can stop them being taken to an abattoir straight from the store or breeders' sale is to set a reserve of a bit more than the fat price.

Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

Hi,

I hear what you are all saying, but I thought I would offer them on here first at a reduced price.

If someone takes them it will save me having to put a couple of new tyres on the livestock trailer, will save me time and fuel going to market etc etc.

Thanks

If you know anyone around you with any sort of trailer it might be easier to try and borrow. A horse box will probably be enough to move the numbers of sheep you are looking at? Be worth a bottle o plonk as a thankyou and you'll still be better off!

If you were closer I think we would probably have the majority of them!

Most of our sheep have now gone to a lovely new home, however, we still have two very late lambs (1 ewe, 1 Castrated ram)  they are a southdown/suffolk cross £30.00 each

Also a young cross ewe (fairly small) £30.00

Thanks for all your interest,

Ideally we would like the remaining sheep to be taken by this weekend.

p.s. (cooper956) We are so pleased that most of our flock has gone to such a nice home, and the photos look great. We are hoping to visit your camp site next year.
