Is SMA Baby Milk OK for pigs?
« on: August 10, 2011, 01:46:00 pm »
Hi,

I hate the idea of waste, and have half a large tin of SMA Gold Top (human) baby milk left over from when my granddaughter came to stay with me.  I wondered if it would be OK to give it to our two 8 week old weaners rather than throw it in the bin.  Does anyone know whether this would be OK?

This would be classed as catering waste, so would be illegal to feed.

If it were a brand new tin ;) and you made it up for them outside(ie not in your kitchen) it would be ok and yes pigs absolutely love it but be careful it doesn't make them scour as it can be quite rich, we have raised many a poorly piglet on it.

It more likely illegal however, "what people dont know wont harm them" I personally wouldnt due to it being in affect milk- so may cause them to scour- not good.

I would be mindful of using the term above as people have been caught out by random inspections- Punishment can be severe if what I'm told is true

Of course it will be all right.
Get over all this political corectness. "Catering waste",..."Illegal"... "Punishment can be severe". Where exactly are the gestapo going to come from who will administer this severe punishment? Is someone on this forum going to report this heinous crime? This is a forum for practicality and common sense, - is it not?
Your SMA milk will be based on cows milk, just as your sow replacement milk is  and your piglets will love it

landroverroy, that's a pretty irresponsible attitude for any livestock keeper to adopt  :-\
Laws were made and changed following the last FMD outbreak, the forum may be for practicality and common sense - but for me it should not be advising keepers to break these laws (which, at the end of the day, are there to protect the health of your, and everyone elses' stock)
As has been said elsewhere on the forum, a quick phonecall to your local councils' animal health officer will clear up any queries about what can and can not be fed - if in doubt they'll keep you right.

HH - I am not being in ANY way irresponsible. I am talking SENSE.
I am a farmer and was affected by the foot and mouth outbreak and I am not likely to forget it.
You are like the person who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
There is the world of difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law, which means that while it would be illegal for Wilder to go collecting unused food from her friends, it is not IN ANY WAY going to cause or spread disease if she gives the rest of her milk powder to her pigs.
How many people on this forum, do you think, give their pigs a biscuit or similar as a treat?
Are you going to report them all?
Do you REALLY think, in the REAL world that they are spreading disease?
 Get real.

In the REAL world we all do things that break the rules (breaking the speed limit when you're running late??)
I use quite a few baby products for non thriving and poorly piglets/pigs. Ready made carton SMA for when i only want a small amount, baby rice for hungry litle blighters, baby porridge for poorly pigs, infact Sainsburys own brand porridge saved the life of my old boar. In saying this i do have a dedicated pig kitchen/feed room and non of those products enter my domestic kitchen.

Hang on a minute  >:( I didn't say anything about reporting anybody. :o
And at the end of the day it doesn't matter what I, or anybody else thinks of the law - the fact is that it's the law.

Whether you agree or not that's fine, but I see no need to make insulting remarks about me  ???

Sorry didn't mean to insult you. Just trying to get a sense of proportion into what appears to me to be goody goodyness gone mad. X

I believe(though I may be wrong) that Jaffa cakes are o.k.as a treat/bribe for pigs. My vegan nephew eats them ??? ???

What I love about this forum is that if you ask a question you get good sound advice - Personally I think it is FAB to get reminded of what the LAW says - you can't make an informed decision without being fully informed  ;)

Just like the speed laws - if you KNOW what the limit is you can make a calculated decision as to whether it is appropriate to travel at anything over/under that speed (road conditions, surrounding traffic, time of day, weather, road surface, likelihood of flocks of sheep etc etc). Ignorance is no defence.

As long as they've not come from the kitchen Sylvia  ;)
Defra have a wee bit in the feeding guidelines which says
"Former foodstuffs other than catering waste food from kitchens etc
(see above) containing rennet, melted fat, milk or eggs but where these
materials are not the main ingredient;"

I think you're safe enough with a jaffa cake  ;) ;D

Wow, I didn't realise I would start such a lengthy and moral/legal discussion!  I wasn't really thinking about the legality of the situation - just whether it would be good, bad or indifferent health-wise for our two little piggies.  Like some of the other posters I feel that the letter of the law can be somewhat over the top, and if I use common sense (and, let's face it there is no way I would be preparing baby milk in sterilised bottles in an area where there was any meat - raw or otherwise) then I don't think I am likely to be spreading any nasty diseases to my pigs.  Fortunately I did get the information I was after - namely that baby milk won't do the pigs any harm unless fed in large quantities.

Thank you to everyone who replied.

wilder      a line has to be drawn somewhere        as has been posted on this thread that line can be and is pushed further out       if that line is pushed even further some will try and push it even further      when you look after livestock you take on a duty of responsibility to uphold the law as regards there welfare and what you feed them         it is as simple as that    end of :farmer:
