Not egg bound

Hi
I have just killed the hen I susspected of been eggbound.  When my wife gutted her she found that she was full of a watery fluid.  I was just wondering what it was and how it became full.  My wife who has more experience of killing chickens for eating says that the hen had water on the lungs and would not have survived much longer anyway.  Is this right?
