Another question re show preparation
« on: July 11, 2011, 01:09:26 pm »
Just so I don't look like the odd one out - I'm taking a jacob ewe lamb to Turriff show and have hunted high and low to find out what I'm supposed to do re the actual sheep preparation but can't find anything.
Entry done
Non accredited section
Not too bad on halter and getting better
I will tag as late as possible to avoid any losses
Movement doc to do there and back

so
Do I bath - think I read a week before
Just a wee trim for any untidy bits
This is what I'm really not sure about is brushing - sure I read a reference to puff ball or such like somewhere - what is the best equipment to do this?
Thanks again experts

You need to do some carding although probably this need not be too extensive with a lamb - when was she born?  Yes bath around a week before to allow fleece to tighten up again although some say lambs should never be washed.  My friends who show Jacobs  extensively and very successfully definitely wash their Jacob lambs but my BWM lamb should definitely not be washed.  Oil for horns.  I use baby oil but they like the horns really black in the north so you might want to consider hoof oil if you can keep her still enough.

List for big day

Trimming shears
Carding combs
Stain remover
Oil
Rag or brush to apply oil
Halter
First aid kit
White Coat
Buckets and bowls
Feed and bedding
Paper work (x2 here one to show ground and one from plus show paperwork)
At least some water and a snack for you as the absolute minimum.

I rather like this link http://www.peasridge.co.uk/acatalog/Showing_Sheep_-_the_essentials.html even if it does advertise their products.

Thank you for the reply - and the link - off to the shops and I think I'll practice the carding on another lamb first!!

Amended the response slightly as some lambs definitely should not be washed but Jacobs fall into the wash category.
