keeping weaners in
« on: February 18, 2009, 07:24:26 pm »
My first batch of weaners is arriving on friday (8 weeks old). I am getting ready to put up electrical fencing up around their enclosure. I want to run three strands at different heights. How high from the ground should I go with the first strand? I don't know how tall they'll be, and I don't want them walking out under it  :). I was thinking 1 foot from the ground?? and then spaced a foot highter and so on? Am I on the right track?  :farmer:

Sounds ok, although dont be surprised if at first they do escape.

Is there any way you can put the electric fence inside a permanent fence til they get used to it?  Usually when we've had bought in weaners they go up to the fence, get a shock, and run forwards! Once they are used to it though they are no bother. (Of course they will know the minute the battery goes flat!!!)
The heights soung ok for the wires though.

Thats what we do when we wean the pigs.  Especially as our latest sow knows the second the electric fencing is off, and takes babies off for long ambles around the holding.  (Which is ok except on hunting days).

Unfortunately not, the first enclosure is in an last years vegetable garden, which is just off the garden proper. On the plus side I have four young boys (and their cousin who's staying with us for four months while his mammy is in Chad) who will gladly do any running around for me. I'm currently re-fitting a pig arc I acquired in the locality, so if I can do that in time i'll put it in the field adjacent (which is fenced) and run a section of electric fence around a portion of it. The fence is mains supplied, so carring a power cut it should never go down! thanks for the advice!  :farmer:
