New Cockerel working well!
« on: June 20, 2011, 08:27:12 am »
Just had the first chicks hatch from a batch of eggs fertilised by our new cockerel. Our old Light Sussex Cock was related to some of the hens, so had to be replaced this year.
One chick came early last night (20th day) and this morning there are anothe 4 with lots more pipped. The old cock used to give us almost 100% fertility with 21 out of 24 hatched not unusual. Hope this one is as good!

Well, we ended up with 16 chicks out of 24 eggs. One dead in shell and the rest infertile. Not too bad for a young 'un! All hatched themselves too without any help so have finally got humidity right.
We shall give these a fortnight then set another batch.
