baby bagot

i think we decided wev only got the one baby due this year. it wont do belilini any harm to wait another year. now little baby-bagot (abrakadazzle) is still with her mum, gets handled everyday and comes in the house for a couple of hours everyday, completely tame but... she now runs so fast i can hardly catch her. i was wanting a least one goat tame so i can control the rest of them, plus would like to try showing just for fun.
she must be 5 weeks this week, her mum adores her. should we try and bottle raise her on her own now,  to make her extra tame. or just accept shes gona run like a race horse? and let her stay with her mum?

The trick is to get her to want to come to you, chasing just becomes a game or a deterant :)

and Bagots are pretty wild.
Cesar will happily come to the fence or gate for a tickle, but after 14 months he still skips off when we are in with him.  You have to stand with your arm stretched out & look away from him, then if he feels like it, he'll sniff your fingers...... then may let you stroke him.  He only gets brushed in the warm weather as I can't hang about in the cold!  ;)

as jinglejoys says, make her want you... and be Very patient!

maybe shel come when shes on hard feed. she fell asleep on the couch with my son last night for hours, im sure she was watching tv too! but when shes outside she off with her mum (who has started sniffing my hand by her choice now) so shes really hard to catch. my old goats both wore collars for years (they came with them). would u put a collar on a lively goat or is it too dangerous in case they get strangled?

if you dont "need" a collar - then personally I'd leave it.
again, to share my somewhat limited experience, Cesar had a collar put on him to get him from the trailer to the shed... he wasn't tame enough to let us take it off again so we left it. However, being a Bagot his long hair became tangled & in the end we had to cut it off him.
the old milker was walked to be milked, we used a soft dog collar & lead, both of which were just put on when we needed to.

I'd say get them used to wearing a collar & lead (easier said than done!) but remove both when your're not with them..

the chickens are off to market this week so going to put the bagots in the their paddock (6ft fence) til iv finished the goats one. their "permanent field" will be on a steep hill with loads of old trees that arent important if they get chewed. i expect theyl come into the stable during the worst of winter but other than that i hope itl do. its 1/3 acre and im planning on cutting weeds etc for them if theyl eat it. do u think 1/3 acre will last 10 months without going to sour? maximum of 4 bagots.
also our stallion lives with his mares all year round. could you leave a billy with the nannys in the same manner or would treat him like a ram and keep them seperate unless its breeding season?
