Peacock advice wanted please
« on: February 14, 2011, 12:10:14 pm »
A friend has recently had a peacock come to live in her semi-rural Aberdeenshire garden.  She has asked all the people locally who either keep, or have kept, peafowl if it belongs to them but it does not and noone has offered to take it.  She is keen to find it a new home as she does not keep poultry herself and is not keen from a noise perspective.  She has managed to contain it in a disused dog run meantime.  I said I would post here as TAS folks always give good advice.  What should she do?

Peacocks go miles, thats one of the problems with them. I would tell her to advertise in a local paper, found items in my local paper used to be free!dont know if they still are. The agri merchants are a good source of info for who has what as well. I would keep it in the run  as they dont like reflections, a neighbour of mine had the whole of his car roof stripped of paint by a peacock scratching at its reflection.

Sorry, we're ok for boys, but if anybody on here wanted to take him on, we could supply a young hen to go with him (foreground / left below) to make a breeding pair.

The downside is like you say, they're incredibly noisy during the breeding season. The plus side is that they're real characters, are absolutely beautiful, and are very easy to keep (ours get a cupful of peanuts before bedtime, and apart from that, basically look after themselves).

If you can get them out of the trees or off the neighbours roof!
