Hello from Shropshire
« on: January 15, 2011, 10:55:19 am »
Hi all,

I thought I'd better register as I have been browsing for a while and I have posted a question in the pig area.

I have kept chickens for a few years when I lived in Wolverhampton. We moved to a 3.5 acre smallholding in Shropshire 12 months ago and have doubled our chicken numbers and have a few quail.

Later in the year we are hoping to get our pigs, Large Blacks and possibly Middle Whites.

In the future we may expand our livestock to include Pygmy goats, Shropshire sheep, ducks, geese etc.

We also hope to be more self sufficient with our fruit and vegetables too.

Any other Shropshire smallholders here?
Bye For Now,

Luminousbrit

Hi there - I'm not in Shropshire but on the Herefordshire/ Worcestershire borders, so not too far from you.  Welcome to the site, I have not joined long ago, but already found it very interesting.

Middlewhites are my favourite pig - Berkshires maybe have a bit more character, and are very nice to look at, but the middlewhite makes beautiful pork, and they are nice and quiet to keep

All the best
Sue

Hello!!! Welcome from the other side of the border in north Wales! Again, not Shropshire, but were just the other side of the Berwyns.  Good luck with everything.

Thank you to evertone for the welcomes  :)

Seems like a friendly bunch here ;D

I do like Berkshires but a friend a couple of miles away is breeding those, if fact she had one who gave birth to 12 piglets on Thursday  :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig: :pig:

Hi welcome from Brittany.  GOS pigs are my favourite, but I do have a couple of large black gilts and a one off neutered large black male.  I find the Large Blacks to be slower growing than the GOS.  Will be interesting to hear of your experience.
