cocci- advice please!
« on: August 22, 2021, 10:05:46 am »
Hello, I've got a lamb that's tested positive for cocci. She's been treated with vecoxan on Friday afteroon. I treated all the lambs as a few of them were scouring, they've dried up but the one that tested positive is still scoring badly. I've given hay and a mineral lick and there's fresh water in the field. She seems happy and is grazing/munching.

Is there anything else I can do for her? Should the vecoxan have worked by now? She was scouring for a week before we found out it was Cocci. (she had bad scours about 6 weeks ago and tested for cocci then which came back negative).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

It might be that her gut lining is damaged permanently causing her to continue scouring. My experience is they dry up within 24 hours of treatment but normally need treating again 3 weeks later if they have had a high burden.

Thanks Twizzel. I think you may be right. Do you think it's worth getting a cocci lick bucket to put down for them? I'm guessing our land will be full of cocci now!  :poo:

The lick buckets need a prescription from the vet to be able to purchase them. Its quite a complex parasite in terms of immunity, clinical disease and preventing it, but yes your ground will have it on now. Best to speak to your vet about ways to prevent it becoming a problem in the future.
