5 day old lamb not thriving
« on: April 12, 2021, 09:00:19 pm »
I have a new  mum (Romney) who had four lambs, one died at birth and another a few days later, it wouldn't feed from mum or bottle. She has another two, one if which we are bottle feeding as she has rejected it. So she has a ram lamb left that she is feeding. She has had mastitis which we have treat with antibiotics and a anti inflammatory, her udders are still very big but I don't think she has mastitis anymore. This lamb, who is now 5 days old and appears to be bloated and has today just started scouring. He takes small amounts from the bottle but very little. There does not appear to be a strong bond between them, he lies down a lot and she walks some distance away with out looking back. I am confident he had plenty of colostrum during the first 24 hours. I have noticed she does not let him feed for very long and on a night when they are in the pen she paws at him to get him to stand up. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem and how I might fix it? I am happy to bottle feed him if necessary as I don't think she is doing a very good job. Many thanks.
