HELP NEEDED ABOUT CHICKENS
« on: August 18, 2010, 09:05:47 pm »
Hi I am hoping someone here could help a friend who has chickens, we talk on the Facebook site, and she has asked this following question which I have copied and pasted for you..hope you can help!

...We have lost 2 chickens in the past 2 days...1 each day. They are stripped of skin, feathers and meat only on one side of its body....and one had it's head ate...but the stub was still connected to it's body.

The first one I found cuz the chickens were pecking away at it, the second one , my dog was sniffing around and I saw him find it. He wasn't interested in it, he was trying to find what killed it. Anyway, it was dragged to the very end of o...ur fence and whatever did it tried to pull it thru the bottom of the fence. There was a place in the fence right above where it tried to pull it under that has been kinda opened up where we put extra fence together. I think it has to be fairly small, cuz if it was a coyote(which we do have but have NEVER, in 12 years been bothered by)it would've either eaten it on the spot or took it with it...same with a fox. Both of which are big enough to carry a full grown hen. So I am thinking weasel, mink...MAYBE a skunk. Hubby did smell a skunk the day before. I have asked to borrow my uncles live trap...but am curious as to whether any of you have had similar troubles. I have raised chicken for the 12 years we have been here...and lots of other animals, too and have NEVER had any predator problems. Of course this is my own fault cuz e have never locked them up...even at night. Bet I will now, tho. I got 20 young hens that I just raised this spring and 6young ducks that I got about the same time. This animal is going after my 6-7 year old hens, tho...so far. And the pullets are all starting to lay really good right now...so I hate to lose them all. Any help would be appreciated. I just want my nice healthy chickens and other animals to remain that way, darn it!

I take it you're in the USA? We don't have coyotes or skunks in the UK! We do have some other members from across the pond who may be able to help.
