Wheat Seed?
« on: August 10, 2010, 08:34:22 am »
Hello,

I am thinking of growing Wheat so I can grind my own flour.  Does anybody know where I can buy seed that is suitable for flour production?

Many Thanks

I would just buy a couple of pounds of a pet food supplier, but i think you will find the effort space to make it work is'nt worth the bother of growing grain on such a small scale.

The type of wheat needed to make flour, for bread at least, has to be of a certain kind.  Mostly the big flour producers import their grain from Canada which has the right growing conditions, which we don't apparently have in Britain.  You could however grow spelt which is the ancient grain grown here.  It is still grown in Shetland on at least one croft (Isbisters on Trondra to those of you up there) but where you would get the seed from I don't know.  You would need a fairly big area to grow it. Maybe the Organic gardening Catalogue could point you in the right direction, or the Strawbridges (although they don't answer their emails  :( ) or Huge F-W  :)

I think its black oats they grow up here to be traditional or is that the same as spelt. Why not grow the corn dolly wheat then you can sell the stems to the craft folk?
