Help on Call Ducks Wanted!
« on: February 19, 2018, 01:17:22 pm »
Hello Everyone, This is the first forum i have ever joined as google is just not helping answer my questions! We have a huge garden and recently built a lovely duck pen we got 2 females and a male call duck WOW were the females loud!! We live in a semi-detached house in a built up area and we just couldn't upset our neighbors so we had to re-home. The male however didn't seem to bad but we didn't think it was fair keeping him lonely until we found him a friend so we now have an empty pen. Me and my partner are thinking of getting some ducklings 3 male calls. Can you help answer my question on just how loud they are? What are they like just keeping males together? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

Hi there, call ducks are fascinating waterfowl and great fun. I ve kept them for about 3 years now so no expert but learnt a bit about them. They're very sociable and bond well.
The females do have quite a loud laugh like quack but the males just a gentle rasp. I have 4 males that bonded from ducklings, 3 from the same hatch that always stick together. Only breaking ranks at mating season. So having a few males should be fine. Most breeders would be glad of you to take a few male ducklings. You can find them on preloved waterfowl or auctions.
They're easy kept as long as have some grazing space ideally, small bath or pond, netted enclosure preferably and coop for the nights.
Charming, intelligent, friendly creatures that make good pets too.

Loved my calls, unfortunately so did stoats, weasels and finally the fox, what it didn't kill I found dying, I re-homed my remaining female. They were such fun, I called them laughing ducks, once settled I found they were only noisy at feeding time or when they got separated or otherwise upset.
Would agree with everything Sarah says, try and get from same hatch if you can, but different colours are fun. and they kept the slugs down :-).
someone said the males quacked more like Donald Duck, a much softer sound, but again when upset they could raise their voices. Not to the girls level though  :)
Oh I do miss mine. :-(.
