Baby ducks hatched
« on: August 03, 2010, 06:38:42 pm »
Four hatched, doing well so far, left other 5 eggs in incubator but can't remember exact date we set the eggs so not sure how long to leave them.  They were all showing life in tehm at 12 days.

Four ducklings hatched seem well - eating, drinking and pooing as they should. Going to leave the other eggs till Friday then bin them if no cracks appear. Oldest female died this morning but have three eggs ready to put in the incubator when it has been cleaned.  She was 10, but still laying - an egg was half way out so her death must have been very quick.  Don't think she was egg bound as she was fine yesterday after laying her last one.  Anyone know if this egg would hatch if fertile - it's absolutely normal.

Unless you keep them seperate they will cross breed. I let my 3 Indian Runners out on to the river for the first time yesterday and they loved it and most importantly come back home with all the others. One of my Aylesbury boys is always trying to get his wicked way with one of my Call Ducks.

Well I can't keep them separate, so I shan't bother, but Brian might (he's having the four babies) so would it matter if they did breed, as all he's wanting is some pet ducks and eggs fro breakfast.

Don't see what problems that would cause. The 3 chooks I hatched 2 months ago were just an assortment of eggs from my girls. Yes I knew who the father was but no idea who mum was. :chook:
