Then we agree to disagree - I wouldn't go back to a shed having experienced Red Mite!! tooooo many places for them to hide in a shed !

sheds all the way, i have a converted 7X5 shed, that has a self contained food store (or isolation compartment) as well as sleeping quarters,

though aesthetically pleasing it is a bugger to clean (not able to stand upright without removing the roof), and i feel the perches are a little close together, and no room for inside food/water.
How ever coops are more easy to move.

SFS - you can get redmite in any sort of hen accommodation, both are as bad as each other, if you have to burn interior fittings such as roost bars and nest boxes, it is easier to make new for a shed than a specific coop.

Agreed - with any type of wooden structure red mite have a field day, seems more so this year with it being so dry I suppose. A lot of our customers are telling me they have bad infestations of mites.

I have moved away from wood to plastic for hen houses for a couple of reasons:

1) No end grain or cracks / splits for them to hide.

2) Ability to be powerwashed without damage

3) A shed is quite difficult to move once erected - and I like to move the hens around to reduce worm likleyhood and give the ground a chance to rest.

But each to their own.
