Old hay
« on: October 04, 2017, 08:53:58 am »
Hi,
I have been offered a big bale of barn stored hay from 2016 harvest. I have seen it and smelt it. Although not as fresh smelling as this year's hay, it looks clean and dust free and doesn't small musty. Should I buy it or invest in a far more expensive bale from this year?
I have pedigree Jacobs that I would like to show next year.

I don't have a choice  :( . Didn't get any hay in this year, 40+ bales from 2016 is going to have to feed in 2018. Have 12 large bales haylage ordered which won't get us through.
If its not musty I'd go for it, sounds like hay will be in short supply back end of winter.
And welcome to TAS by the way

I would happily feed it but supplement with a lick bucket as it will have lost its vitamins in storage.

I had 20 bales left over from last year and our sheep were trying their best to reach it at the side of their pen when I briefly brought them in recently !
As mentioned by others I'd happily use it (and will) but I would also supplement with a lick bucket to replace any minerals lost.

Thank you, all, for your comments. The big bale arrived today and it really does smell and look good but I will take the advice on giving a supplement lick.
