After reading another post it said you need a transporters licence for over 40 miles,ops moved some sheep 75 miles a few weeks ago.I thought you only needed a licence if you travelled over 8 hours,just wondered as want to go to market next week which is about 100 miles away.

you definately need a licence!! my understanding is that if you transport livestock for commercial gain transporting over 40 miles requires a licence. and that is total distance for the day so 20 miles to mart and 20 miles back if you don't achieve reserve

We have a transport licence (I think it is a Cat2) which allows us to transport sheep up to 40 miles.  It is free and lasts for 5 years.
I always thought you had to have licences and paperwork if you were travelling further than that.  However, I spoke to Animal Health as we need to pick a ram up from Derby (we're in Devon) and was told that as it is one sheep we are picking up we don't need to fill in any licences and it can go in the back of the car.  I really should double check this!

It might be a good idea to ring Animal Health up and see what they say about taking yours to market.
