Sheep Tag Recommendations, Anyone?
« on: July 18, 2016, 08:38:36 am »
Just went online to order some more Allflex Bubblegum tags and I see that yet again I'm required to buy a new applicator as well.  I still have occasional problems with the Bubblegum tags, less since I routinely split them after insertion.  Before I order a new applicator (to join my existing collection of applicators for tags that were rubbish or that have been superseded) I'd see if anyone had come across a better tag.

I use Shearwell tags with few problems, also if they change their taggers then you get it for free with your next order

Ditto.  And they have a clever design for the taggers, whereby the 'jaws' are replaceable, so usually, if there is an update, they can just replace the inner jaw pieces.

Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

I also use shearwell set tags, and have found them excellent. I have not lost a single tag in goats (touch wood, I said this about sheep then had a single soay x lamb who ripped one tag out twice!) I put them in the front of the ear and they seem to stay there! If you're doing a lot, they'll even guarantee the tags for life (free replacements) if you buy 200 at a time!

Shearwells SETEid tags - stay in the ears and yes you get a free tagger if they change the tags. Quick delivery and easy to order replacements for pedigree animals that need to keep their number.

Symtags are good too, my OH has been using them for years with an excellent retention rate, and when you're breeding pedigrees on a small scale, they don't laugh at you when you phone up to only order one tag, complete with tons of management information.

I am using Caisley tags.  Not lost one yet but I have not tagged huge numbers.  Expensive but I can read everything from a reasonable distance, including the breed numbers which are too small to see on some tags.

another firm vote for shearwell data tags. previously to using them tagging was a catalogue of lost tags, broken tags and torn ears. we have never had a problem with and SD tag in 4 years
