Problem with tups willy!
« on: July 03, 2016, 08:33:09 pm »
I have a shearling ram who I was going to get vasectomised who has developed a problem with his boy bits.
He keep sticking his willy out and there is a white thing hanging down that looks like a worm/parasite?  Never seen anything like it before and will be ringing vets in the morning but wondered if anyone know what it might be?

Having spent an hour googling it I think it might be normal! Not sure why he keep sticking it out though  (googling ram penis is not for the faint hearted!)

Sounds normal.

Is he peeing normally?

Not sure about peeing as he's in the field away at grazing. The guy that checks them for me was most concerned as he keeps sticking it out while he's eating his corn. Been to look tonight and noticed the white bit dangling when he puts it out. I wonder if he's got a bladder infection?  or maybe he just likes getting air around it  ;D
He appeared happy enough otherwise...am popping back tomorrow to worm and tag so will check his temp and may give him some Betamox incase there is something wrong

That's what a sheep penis looks like  :sheep: or is that a Muscovey duck  :&>.

The only thing wrong I could think of is that he may have bladder stones causing a blockage to the bladder outlet - which is a very urgent problem.  Phone the vet to get the definitive opinion - I've never seen it but was told by a vet that the emergency treatment is to cut off the white dangly bit.  Hopefully a TAS vet will appear and tell me I'm talking total tosh.

Anyway, spend some time observing him to see that he's passing urine as usual.

The "worm " is the rams urethral process and perfectly normal , in fact when you buy a ram you should turn him over pull back the sheath and check that the worm is their ,if not then you don't buy .   Continually putting out is normal in some young rams  so long as he arches his back and thrusts then normal

Absolutely fleecewife.
It may be normal teenage hormones making him stick it out, or may be a bladder blockage.
Please make sure he is peeing ok Asap as it is an emergency and can be fatal if he can't pee.
Sheep hide illness very well, so the bladder can rupture inside before they seem unwell.
If you watch him pee with normal frequency, good steady stream and normal colour and consistency then it could just be him enjoying himself, but please check the former before putting it down to that.

But not wholemeal  :roflanim:  We kept Muscovies for several years so had plenty of opportunity to see their bits in action. Well done your niece - a true investigative brain  ;D
It's that I've not seen a tup's bits in any great detail.  We check the penis on tups but hadn't thought to extrude it - they do that when they're being shorn, but Mr F shears the tups, and has kept their embarrassing secrets amongst boys  :eyelashes:

OK, since we've broached the subject.....

Anyway, spend some time observing him to see that he's passing urine as usual.

With my boys, that appears to be "constantly dribbling". Is that normal, or do I need to get them some Tena man-pants:o
