Hit by fly strike
« on: May 25, 2017, 11:15:35 pm »
Came to shear yeast ready and 2 of the 5 was hit by strike
All areas clipped and crovect
Lambs where ok
Think next year I will have them clipped a little earlier
Not a great experience but glad we got on top of it
Is there anything I can give the ewes to give them a boost
They are feeling sorry for themselves

I would give antibiotics as the ewes are at serious risk from infection. And keep on top of cleaning the wounds....

Antibiotic and metacam is what I gave my ewe a couple of weeks ago, sort the strike out then leave them quiet for a few days as they can go into shock from it. If you have any mineral drench you could give that (the nettex one is good) and a few nuts to get her energy up but other than that just leave her quiet :-) if she's got patches of raw skin blue spray and when she goes out get a tub of yellow summer fly cream to put on the skin, its good at keeping it from drying out and cracking whilst it heals.

This humid, hot weather has seen an explosion I fly numbers.
