injured pig
« on: April 18, 2010, 08:42:15 pm »
i have 2 pigs which i am keeping at home for my own consumption. They are 18 weeks old. One has jumped over a stone wall, landed badly and is now clearly injured and only able to weight bear on her hind legs. As an amateur it doesn't look like an injury that will correct itself and i expect it wont be economical to try to fix the damage so i assume the pig will need to be slaughtered/culled. My first concern is for the welfare of the pig but in the event that we can't keep it what are the rules regarding slaughter/culling and possible future consumption/disposal?
Thanks!

;)if you have a vet out to the pig and the slaughter house agree to take the animal it is possible for the animal to be killed and eaten by yourself on a yellow card from the vet.

for example a friend of mine had to have the vet shoot a steer he then took it to the slaughter house to be delt with but under the yellow card system it was only for home consumption.

so all is not lost.
