Soft shelled eggs
« on: March 13, 2010, 07:58:06 pm »
Hi everyone,

One of my Black Rocks who normally lays an egg a day for me has started laying soft shelled eggs whilst on the perch at night. The first one was about a week ago and I thought it was just a one off. It was a broken egg on the floor but had a thin rubbery shell. The next day she laid a normal egg. Then the next day we had a soft shelled egg again. We then had two days of normal eggs and I thought she was ok. Then this morning once again a soft shelled egg. I have been giving limestone flour on their food and they have oyster shell grit so plenty of calcium. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it just a blip that will right itself. She is behaving absolutely normally and eating well so I'm a bit confused as to what could be causing it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

They have layers pellets and free run of the garden for a couple of hours a day. they then get a treat of pasta, tuna, sweetcorn and a bit of yoghurt just before bed time.

one of my black rocks does this sometimes - we either get rubbery 'shell' or a very wrinkled paper thin one. Like yours, ours have oyster shell, layers pellets and free range.
One thing I would say (having found out the hard way!!) is get rid of all the soft shell eggs asap, my sussex has developed a taste for eggs since BR laid some softies and now I have to collect the eggs very quick for risk of losing them to her (although our ceramic eggs have put a bit of a stop to it)
