Hi all, having a hard time trying to navigate through the maze that is gov.co.uk !

How many eggs would you sell before you bother getting certified / registered with relevant bodies and how much does it cost?

Thanks a bunch, finding this forum such great help

It's on my 'to do' list to look into but I don't think it's to do with number of eggs but rather how you sell them. If you sell them direct to consumer from the farm gate or otherwise, you don't need to register. If you want to sell via other outlets (e.g. local farm shop) or to businesses who will use the eggs in a finished product, you need to register. The reason I'm hesitating is partly because I believe you have to grade the eggs if you are registering and I have a small flock, many of whom are different breeds producing very different sized eggs so that would be a nightmare. Also I think the stamping is quite a hassle - there was a post on here about the cost of the stamp too.

Good point about the different sized eggs etc. and found the link to the egg stamp. We only have a small flock at the moment but just trying to get some figures and ideas down on what to do next as we have room for more...

Cheers, Ross

If you sell at the farm gate, you don't need to to stamp the eggs. If you put them through a shop then you do. I believe in terms of hens, if you have over 50 you have to register with the AVHLA and if over 300 you have to register with DEFRA and stamp the eggs anyway. Maybe wrong though.

I don't think the regulations have changed since I did the page on my old Marans site
