Newborn Lamb with Broken Ribs
« on: January 01, 2015, 11:53:22 pm »
Just had monster twin ram lambs born this evening. First one was a tight squeeze but came out after some pulling and is up and sucking fine.
Second one was coming back legs first so i had to quickly deliver it. It doesn't want to suck and its left rib cage seems to be either deformed or broken? Its breathing very heavily and the whole left side is going in and out deeply as it breathes. The lamb is also showing no willingness to suck so I have tubed it.
I guess theres not a lot i can do but hope it pulls through but any ideas or advice of what this could be and how to solve it? Cheers!

I'd consult a vet, pronto.  It sounds like one we had with Schmallenberg the year before vaccination became available.  Whatever the cause it's probably in considerable pain and distress.

what ever the cause the first port of call would have to be a vet. Flail chest with collapsed lung? why would you want to suck with all that :-( . Without a better idea of what is going on, doing nothing isn't an option in my book.

Assuming broken ribs then tube  colostrrum and give pain relief, metacam etc might make it more likely to suck

Lamb seemed to be better this morning and had sucked. Went to the vets today so gave it some pencillin and ketofen. Figers crossed he should pull through! I was probably over reacting and panicking in the middle of the night! Thanks!

What did the vet say? Was it diagnosed as broken ribs?

I know what it's like in the middle of the night. :(  Everything seems ten times worse than it does in daylight. And at this time of year, there is much more night than day. ::)

Things usually always happen in the night too! I didn't take the actual lamb as i didn't want to seperate it from the ewe so i showed her a video and she thinks it's either broken or very bruised!
