Sheep stuck on her back now right side swollen
« on: June 23, 2014, 08:36:11 pm »
Hi all

As the title really. Last thursday checked ewes at 6 am no problems. Checked again at 9.30pm ewe stuck on her back. Got her up quickly could hardly stand. Massaged for 15 minutes and she was managing to stand but walking skewed towards her right. Put her in overnight. Back out with the others next morning as was walking just a tiny bit stilted on right side. Since then has been fine eating etc doesnt look any different from others. Seems content but there is an obvious soft bulge on her right side. Now im thinking she has either herniated whilst trying to get up or she is still severely bloated but wouldnt she be showing signs of discomfort? Shell probably drop dead at some point. But any thoughts greatfully received.

I have no idea but would expect a hernia to show in belly rather than side. Bloat agin I haven't witnessed but would expect the whole side to be enlarged. Worth a call to vet cos bloat can be dealt with I believe and you should save her.   :fc:

I was hoping you would get lots of replies to this.  I don't know the answer, but I did spend a whole spring worrying about a ewe which had one side much bigger than the other, like a big lump.  It turned out that was just her, and sheep's insides are lopsided anyway.  But if this is a discrete lump then it could be she's herniated something, but without seeing the animal it's hard to judge.
I hope you get some more ideas.

I was thinking that this could just be trapped gas which as she was on her side travelled across. Usuually it is the left side that can look lopsided due to gas in the rumen. i expect overtime it will diminish.

Perhaps it is just the shape of her but I have surely never noticed it! Which I would! The ewe herself simply does not understand why I keep checking her. Happy as larry. And yes I thought bloat only showed on the right in very severe cases, def not the case here. Its not really a discrete lump more of a bulge. Dufficult to explain. I shall just assume its 'normal' until her behaviour tells me otherwise ;)
