Petal has kidded. Update!
« on: May 09, 2014, 05:55:35 am »
As title says Petal has given birth to twins, my dilemma is that one is up and looking good whilst the other is very small and can't stand, do I step back and let nature take it's course or do I try with the very weak twin and risk losing it later on?

I would take the little one ndoors to bottle feed.   A lot of these little ones are perfectly viable but do need a little help...............a shame to lose a life if it is saveable.
A lot of kids that I have had indoors for up to 2 weeks have gone on to be fantastic milkers.     If yours is a boy, then only you can judge what to do.
Sometimes these little ones just didn't get the food/space in the womb to grow as fast as the other one.

The advantage of having the tinies indoors............you can feed often...........I recommend every 2 hrs for the first few days except overnight.  This way, you don't overload the gut and they thrive.

If he is all there, but just small there should be a chance that he is going to be alright. He needs to get colostrum, if necessary by stomach tube.

I have had tiny lambs like that, it just means that the cotyledons (of which there is a finite number) were unevenly distributed, and they are what nourishes the foetus during pregnancy. Mine have thrived, but of course there could be some things wrong with him.

I would see how it goes, but not get too upset if he doesn't make it.

Well done Petal and you Anne, you're up even earlier today after what was probably a late night.  :D

Our second of twins was quieter, more huddled, less animated all round but is as bright as the other now at 1 week old, jumping about together head butting.  I was very worried at first and did a couple of colostrum feeds for it from the bottle, just squirting it down gently and I could feel with my fingers placed on its throat that it was swallowing so I knew it was getting some, not much, but some.

Let us know how you go :fc:

Congratulations. I bet you are exhausted. My little one is now at 2 days old bouncing about and absolutely fine.
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

On closer inspection it's a boy , have managed to get a bit colostrum off mum so have tubed him with that. The very fact that he is still with us is a bit of a miracle he is so tiny. I did try a bottle but even that teat was too big.
Pleased to hear that your kid and Amanda's are doing well

Gobo seems fine she is insisting on staying with Petal and her kids, I tried removing her but she kicked up a terrible fuss. It's only since they arrived that she has stopped lying with her head in the corner she is just eating hay and some fresh fruit and veg, checked her udder today and seems cool and doesn't seem to be too uncomfortable.
